For us, positive change means improving people's lives with quality products – and taking responsibility for our impact on the planet, in line with our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Environmental responsibility – better solutions with a lower carbon footprint
At TENA we're continually discovering and innovating, finding new ways to improve people's lives while also improving the environmental footprint of our products. We want to design products and services for a society where less goes to waste and more is recycled and reused, while driving sustainable continence care management. It's all about doing more with less.
Our history of environmental responsibility
2021
Committing to a cleaner environment: ambitious goals for reduced climate impact
The Science Based Targets initiative is one of the world’s fastest-growing voluntary corporate climate initiatives, trusted by over 11,000 companies and financial institutions worldwide. In 2021, it approved Essity’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% from:
- Energy and electricity in production
- Key raw materials, transport and waste
We aim to meet these targets by 2030, using 2016 as a base year. This means our climate commitment supports the Paris Agreement.
2020
All TENA European factories run on 100% purchased certified renewable electricity
As of 2020, all TENA factories in Europe run on 100% purchased renewable electricity – certified with guarantees of origin issued by external institutes such as the European Electricity Certification System (EECS). Making this switch has cut our carbon footprint by an average of 6% – according to third-party-reviewed Life Cycle Assessments conducted by Essity.
2019
A challenging new target for sustainable packaging
At Essity, one of our packaging ambitions is to increase the share of renewable and recycled materials it is made from. Since 2020, we have made steady progress. Across all Essity brands, the amount of renewable and recycled materials in our packaging grew from 77% in 2020 to 81% in 2025.*
2017
A whole new level of transparency for TENA products
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independent verification that shows environmental information about a product, based on its complete life cycle. Becoming compliant with this standard gave a robust basis for making claims about the environmental performance of our products.
2016
Reducing production waste – new ambitious targets set
Our ambition at Essity, set in 2016, is to achieve zero waste to landfill from our production facilities – ensuring that all production waste is recovered as either material or energy by 2030.
